“Women can speak up” is an inspirational saying by Raphaella Vaisseau – a holiday, birthday, any-time gift for women A motivational gift to encourage women to get out there, speak up, grab opportunity, be adventurous, get along, be brave, and take charge. This “Women can …” saying was written by Raphaella over ten years ago after watching an interview about a study done (in this day and age!) to answer the question, “Why were most Teaching Assistant positions in college given to men rather than women, while there were more female grad students than men?” Unfortunately, Raphaella did not make note of the name of the study or the college. However, the result of the study left an indelible mark on her memory. She remembers the researcher saying the apparent cause was that “women didn’t ask.” Apparently, the researcher explained, women expected to be given the opportunity based on merit, whereas, as it played out in reality, the men simply asked for these positions and got them. Wow. Ah-ha. Yikes. In this particular study it was clear that no one at the college whose job it was to assign the TA positions was noticing, or making the decisions “fairly,” or giving positions to the grad students who excelled. The men asked, the men got. The women waited to be offered the position, and lost out. Raphaella immediately re-wrote her Women’s empowerment affirmation to begin with the words, “Women can speak up.” She went on to spread the word to women everywhere to stand up and ask for what they want. Raphaella’s words on this poster have been a mantra for women’s groups around the world. This is an inspirational present to empower you, a daughter, a sister, a mother, or a friend. Words are powerful. What we affirm we can strive for until our believing makes it so.
